European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States
The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
